Medieval Times is an adventure I’ve wanted to take the family on for a while now. I was so excited to partner with Medieval Times and share my experience with you. It was a magical family adventure. If you’re looking for something the kids will remember for years to come, Medieval Times is the perfect family activity.

I first went to Medieval Times in high school with our Spanish teacher and had a great time. Taking my own kids was even more fun. Medieval Times is a perfect night out for people of any age. Groups of adults and families were all having a great time. I didn’t see a person there that wasn’t cheering and totally engaged in the action.
We used our trip to Medieval Times as a celebration of the holidays. We made a little getaway of it with a visit to LEGOLAND Discovery Center Chicago and the Museum of Science and Industry Chicago. Tying it into Christmas break was perfect.
When I take the kids out on a family adventure, I like to set the stage to get them more involved. Late on Christmas morning, away from the other gifts, the kids found a suspicious-looking box with a scroll on top.
The scroll looked like it had come from the Middle Ages. It was oily, had burned edges, and smelled of cedarwood essential oil.
I took a piece of brown paper and crumpled it over and over again. Then I added a little vegetable oil and crumpled some more. I put a few drops of cedarwood essential oil to give it an old-time smell. Finally, I went to the sink and lit the edges for an old worn look (luckily I was at the sink because I had a hard time getting the flame out!). I rolled the edges around two wrapping paper tubes and finished it off with a handwritten notice.
Hear ye, hear ye! Calling all young knights and ladies of the House of Drewes to use this magic scroll to go back in time to ye Castle of Chicago. Come dressed in your Medieval attire and beeth ready to cheer for your favorite knights in the tournament on December 29, 1352 A.D.
Okay, so it could have been a little better written but I waited until late on Christmas eve to make the scroll and do all of the gift wrapping.
In the box, the kiddos found two adorable knight costumes and a princess costume. (Affiliate Links)
The knight costumes fit completely with the theme at the castle. They had chainmail sleeves, burgundy capes, foam swords and shields, and silver helmets. The princess costume was really a snow-white costume but it looked great alongside the knights.
By the time the evening came for the big Medieval Times tournament, the boys were excited beyond belief. They couldn’t wait to get into costume and head to the castle.
Seeing the Medieval Times castle from the highway made them shout in excitement. Walking through the doors of the castle was like stepping back in time. Everyone working inside was dressed in time period attire and spoke as if they were from the Middle Ages.
We were given red and gold crowns and told we would be cheering for the red and gold knight. Then we were off to explore the castle before the show started.
The Medieval Times castle opens 75 minutes before the start of the show. Showing up early means you have time to explore the castle. During this time you can check out the torture museum, see the horses waiting for the show, buy a real sword, have a goblet of wine, or purchase a knighting package. The Queen and her court also made an appearance before the show.
Soon after being called into the arena and dining area, we were seated and drink orders were taken. There was so much going on that the kids were entertained the entire time.
Dinner is served while the entertainment begins. A three-course meal is spread out throughout the show. At Medieval Times, there isn’t any silverware so everyone eats with their hands. The boys loved this!
Tomato soup is served in a bowl with a handle. You can soak it up with garlic bread or just pick it up and slurp it down.
The next course is a quarter chicken, baked potato, and corn on the cob. Vegetarian options are also available. This was a ton of food for the kids so our waiter brought take-home bags for them.
Dessert and coffee came out last. Ice cream with caramel and whipped cream was a great way to round out the meal.
The show was full of entertainment and pageantry. Horses performed, knights on horseback battled, a falconer sent a falcon swooping overhead. There was always something new and exciting going on.
Before and after the trip, we spent a lot of time reading about knights, castles and Medieval Times. This experience transported the whole family into a different era. It gave us a taste of what it might have been like during the middle ages.
After the show, we were able to talk to the knights and queen and get pictures with them.
It was such a fun and memorable night for the family. The boys are still talking about it and pretending to be knights in their costumes.
DISCLAIMER: I’d like to thank Medieval Times for hosting my family for this magical experience. As always, all opinions are my own.
